John's stylized surf animation appeared in the feature films Five Summer Stories (1975), Forgotten Island of Santosha (1974), and Spinnin' Wheels (1976). His animated surfer was licensed by Hang Ten in 1975. John's animation was also featured on television for Sesame Street and The Electric Company.
While creating his animated films, John co-invented the Lyon Lamb Video Animation System in 1976, which revolutionized the animation production process. This ground breaking invention garnered him an Academy Award® (1979) and an Emmy® (2024) for Technical Achievement.
Today, John works from his studio in Oceanside, California. In recent years, murals have been his primary medium. In 2023, John was inspired to complete The Varmits by his grandson, who fell in love with the unfinished book, which was originally drafted by John's twin brother Dave, in 1970.
